West Clare Tri Club is delighted to announce that following the continued success of its annual “Up the Creek” race, the national governing body, Triathlon Ireland has this year awarded the event ‘National Series Status’
The Vodafone National Series is the premier age group competition in Ireland featuring some of the top events in the country. Athletes compete in these events to determine their overall ranking in his or her age group. The top three athletes in Ireland in each age group are then honoured at a national awards evening. The club have been very successful in this series with local Kilrush athletes such as John Cahill, David Brew, Sarah Brew and Simon Latham receiving awards.
The Club’s highly successful annual feature race “ up the Creek” sprint triathlon takes place each year in June. The course is suited to all participants both beginners and seasoned athletes alike. The guaranteed open water swim in the Kilrush Marina is perfect for first time tri-athletes and those trying to achieve a personal best swim time. The 20K bike is a challenge and the 5.1 km run is an enjoyable sprint finish.
As one of the fastest-growing sports in Ireland, Triathlons have seen participation increased by an incredible 120% in the five years between 2010 and 2015 and gaining 1,000 new members in the process.
Founded in 2011, West Clare Tri Club’s philosophy is based on participation and not elitism and their goal is to promote the joy of sport and taking part in triathlon. The club members are a mix of male, female and juniors and the club continues to welcome new members each year as Triathlon participation continues to grow.
Club Chairman, Jason Hanrahan says “The club is very welcoming to beginners — there are weekly training sessions for beginners and the experienced. Some people think that joining a Triathlon Club is only for elite athletes but that’s not the case. We continually welcome new members and everyone is encouraged to train at the level they are comfortable at”.
Fitness is becoming increasingly popular and Triathlons allow you to build skills in a number of disciplines. For those that don’t like to swim, there is an option of completing in one of the many Duathlons that take place around the County each year. Team entries are also growing in popularity, a team of three take one leg of the race each. It’s a great way for friends to participate together.
This year’s race will take place on June 5th in Kilrush and entry is now open. Entries can be registered on the Triathlon Ireland Website (under race calendar). The race is capped at 300 entries so book early to avoid disappointment. Avail of the special early bird entry price of €45 until April 11th.
The countdown is on, so get your wetsuit, bike and runners ready and book your place in the “Up the Creek” 2016.
